Five-time US national team athlete Gia Doonan is headed to Tokyo as a member of the women's eight.
1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I went to Tabor Academy in MA for high school, and the spring training trip was in Austin, Texas. I had never been but I wanted to go so I said yes so I could go to Austin!
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
2015 was our first NCAA experience as a team for Texas and we showed everyone by making the a/b semi final and then we showed everyone by making the A final. That was when I was like wait a minute we might be kinda fast!
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Some of my favorite practices have been during this selection process. Piece after piece just giving everything you can, knowing your teammates are giving everything they can, is an empowering feeling.
Bad practices? Either you do well, or you learn from it. It's a process, I love all of it
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
It was my goal freshman year to not get PBLed every race. (Passed my launch)
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Have fun, adapt, don't let your highs get too high and lows get too low.
